What is the accuplacer placement test?
We want you to have a successful experience at South Puget Sound so we
provide placement testing to help you and your advisor identify
an appropriate starting point in your education. The fee for the test is $15.00. The
test covers three subject areas: math, reading and English. The
placement test is designed to match your present skill level in
these three areas with the South Puget Sound courses for which you are ready. You may take this test only two times while attending South Puget Sound.
What are the tests like?
The math placement test consists of math
problems at three different levels: arithmetic, elementary algebra and college-level algebra. The test is administered in
a computer-based format. Your
results are immediately available upon completion of testing.
On the English placement test, you are presented
with a number of essays and are asked to find errors in grammar, punctuation, and style.
The reading placement test involves reading
paragraphs and then answering multiple-choice questions
pertaining to what you just read.

How do I prepare for the
tests?
In order to do your best, get a good night’s sleep and eat well
prior to testing. We recommend doing some practice tests to help you
refresh your math, reading, and English skills. Cramming is unlikely to improve
your results. The most important thing is to relax, because this
test does not determine your future. It is only used to help you and
your advisor decide the best place for you to begin.
